Broken Bells // The High Road

How did I miss this?

The High Road - Broken Bells

Broken Bells is a project between James Mercer (lead singer and guitarist of The Shins) and Brian Burton. Their self-titled debut album comes out in March.

Hot Chip // One Life Stand

Check mark.

Their new album, One Life Stand, comes out February 8th.

Winter Blahs

I need to be on a beach somewhere. With pulsating blues in the noonday sun and purples showering the skies at evening's end... and dizzy spells of haze... and that heat sinking into your skin.

I miss summer.

A few songs bring it all back to me though.

HEARTSREVOLUTION // Dance Till Dawn

Electro dance punk at it's finest.

Heartsrevolution are a New York-based group of Ben (synths), Lo (vocals) and Prince Terrence (live drums). Their first release was a single "C.O.Y.A." (Choose Your Own Adventure) in 2007. They recently released an EP titled Hearts Japan EP. Currently they are working on their debut album Ride or Die, which is set for release sometime in 2010. "Dance Till Dawn," is a fantastic track that was featured on Kitsune Maison 8.

Psychedelica: Tame Impala // Sundown Syndrome

Tame Impala hail from Australia. They consist of Kevin Parker, Dominic Simper and Jay Watson. In 2008 they signed with Modular Records (home of Cut Copy, Muscles and The Presets to name a few). They released their Tame Impala EP shortly thereafter. "Sundown Syndrome" was released as a 7" vinyl with "Remember Me" last July. Their debut album is set for an early 2010 release.

CFCF

CFCF is Montrealer Michael Silver. He released the 7", You Hear Colours, in 2008 followed by his first EP, Panesian Nights, in January of '09 (featuring the fantastic track "The Explorers," later released with the vocals of Sally Shapiro). He recently released his first studio album, Continent, in October. On top of his stellar releases, his remixes are also beyond marvelous.

Parallels

All hail synth.

Parallels are Torontonians. They put a nice spin on synthpop and are highly addictive. Formed in 2008 and featuring the former drummer of Crystal Castles, Cameron Findlay, Parallels feature the vocals of Holly Dodson and synthesizers of Joey Kehoe. Their debut album Visionaries comes out in February.

Vienna - Parallels

Here's the fantastic video for "Ultralight," a track taken off their Ultralight EP. I can't recommend this EP enough. One of my best buys off of iTunes.

Top Tracks of '09 Honourable Mentions

So I tried to include the Honourable Mentions at the bottom of my last post, but apparently I couldn't tag all the artists because I ran over the max characters. So, I have to post this separately. Anyways, here are songs that I loved, but that didn't quite crack my list of top tracks.

Honourable Mentions (songs that should be on the list, but aren’t):
  • Walkabout (with Panda Bear) - Atlas Sound
  • Animal – Miike Snow
  • Surprise Hotel – Fool’s Gold
  • Summer Song – YACHT
  • Last One Awake- Memory Cassette
  • Little Secrets – Passion Pit
  • Moth’s Wings – Passion Pit
  • Warm Heart of Africa (feat Ezra Koenig) – The Very Best
  • Ring Ring – SLEIGH BELLS
  • Horchata - Vampire Weekend

Top 12 Tracks of '09*

*I had all intentions of making this the Top 10 Songs of 2009, but I had hell of a time whittling down this list to 10, so it stays at 12. Kind of.

  1. What Would I Want, Sky? – Animal Collective

  2. 1901 – Phoenix

  3. Brother Sport – Animal Collective/ My Girls – Animal Collective (grouped as one entry because I love them both and wanted them both in the top 10)

  4. Feel It All Around – Washed Out

  5. Ambling Alp - Yeasayer

  6. Dominos – The Big Pink

  7. Crystalised – The xx / Islands – The xx (also grouped as one entry because I love them both and wanted them both in the top 10)

  8. 11th Dimension - Julian Casablancas

  9. Young Hearts Spark Fire – Japandroids

  10. Should Have Taken Acid With You - Neon Indian

  11. When I Grow Up – Fever Ray

  12. Psychic City – YACHT (also check out Classixx's remix right here)

**There are actually 14 tracks on the list. (Yet again, I had a really hard time whittling down).***
***What the hell, I should have just done the top 15. Too late now.

The Drums

This is what happens when you abandon a blog and come back to it months later.

You can't stop posting. Well, at least that's the case with me.

Anyways, here are The Drums. Yes, I like The Drums (you could even say I love The Drums - such a bold statement!) Tapped as one of the bands to watch in 2010, The Drums placed 5th in BBC's Sound of 2010. (Ellie Goulding took top spot). The Drums are American and released a fantastic EP, Summertime!, last year. They released the single "I Felt Stupid," in mid-December. I await a full album (soon, please?)

Harlem's Friendly Ghost

Blog overload? Perhaps, but there is just too much good quality stuff out there right now that needs to be recognized.

Case-in-point: Harlem.

"Friendly Ghost," is from the forthcoming Hippies (out in April).

Friendly Ghost - Harlem

The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night

Hailing from Montreal and formed by husband-wife duo Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, The Besnard Lakes are set to release a new album in March. The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night features the terrific track, "Albatross."

Toro Y Moi

Just what I need right now.
(Causers Of This comes out late-February).

Caribou's NEW Odessa

"Odessa" is a new track from Caribou's upcoming album, Swim (out in April). Oh boy, this is one nice track.

Surfer Blood

Um, yes. A million times over.

Floating Vibes - Surfer Blood

The Hey Champ Post

I love Hey Champ. Which is obvious because I am devoting a whole post to them. I first caught them last May when they opened for The Sounds (spectacular concert, by the way). I missed them at Lollapalooza last summer and this upset me greatly. I always await new material from them. Their remixes are always superbly done.

Cold Dust Girl - Hey Champ
Beat Box (Hey Champ Remix) - The Sounds

This Never Gets Old

Thank you Fred Falke. Again and again.

Golden Cage (Fred Falke Remix) - Whitest Boy Alive

New Goldfrapp

This is too good to be true. Especially after Seventh Tree, which never seemed to catch on with me.

"Rocket" is the first single to be taken off their upcoming album, Head First (set to be released in March).

NEW New Young Pony Club

I feel like I have been waiting forever for New Young Pony Club to release something, anything fresh. Recently they released a track off their upcoming sophmore album, The Optimist (due out in March). Let's just say my love lives on for NYPC (mainly due to the fact that I listened to this song over 80+ times - addict? Yes). Highly recommended. Post-punk with that 80's twist.

Lost A Girl - New Young Pony Club

Grizzly Bear + Neon Indian

Just because.

(Yes, I love Neon Indian tremendously).

Cheerleader (Neon Indian 'Studio 6669' Remix) - Grizzly Bear

Dragonette + Van She

I'm still working with the blog and layout. So it should be all done within the week.

I just discovered this track and it's pure fantasticalism. Van She fails to disappoint.

Blog Update

I haven't been keeping up with my blogging lately. I decided to start again, because well, I would like to share all the music I have been discovering as of late. I think I may redesign the blog too and I will be posting my top albums, songs and remixes of '09 in the coming week. I will leave you with a recent favourite of mine, a stellar track from Neon Indian.
